The state of the ecosystem
The 260-hectare field is in a critical transition. After decades of clearing and overgrazing, combined with a major fire 20 years ago, the forest structure is weakened. The upper layers are missing: large specimens of “Quebracho Blanco” and “Algarrobo” are scarce, leaving the soil without its natural umbrella.
The water and soil crisis
The lack of balanced vegetation cover has created a dangerous arid cycle. Without organic matter to retain moisture, the sparse rains erode the soil instead of infiltrating it. In summer, bare soil temperatures eliminate essential microfauna, accelerating a desertification process that seems irreversible without intervention.
Biodiversity in retreat
Native fauna, such as the “Gato Montés“, “Corzuelas“, and birds like the “Rey del Bosque“, have been displaced to increasingly smaller patches of vegetation. By losing the diversity of native flowers and fruits, we also lose pollinators, breaking the natural reproduction cycle of the forest.
The first step: The Sanctuary
Our immediate priority is the perimeter fencing. Currently, stray livestock roam freely, consuming every new sprout that tries to emerge. The fencing acts as a necessary exclusion zone: it will allow the native seeds still present in the soil to complete their germination and growth cycle without being preyed upon, thus restarting the ecological succession.
We are still in time to reverse this process. With proper rest and conscious management, this territory will once again become a haven for biodiversity.
